THE AI PRACTITIONER

About

Tim Parkin

I learned Claude at 70, in retirement, with no technical background. That came after 45 years leading people through change in theatre, at Ericsson and in film.

That is the whole reason this works. I am not a technologist explaining AI to you. I am someone who learned it late, from the same starting point you are on now.

The story

How I got here

Four careers, none of them technical. What connects them is that every one was about getting people to do something new, and doing it well enough that it stuck.

Theatre

Professional theatre

A career that began in the theatre, where a production either works on the night or it does not. It teaches you to read a room, to notice when people have stopped following, and to change what you are doing before the whole thing comes apart.

13 years

Ericsson, across Southeast Asia

Thirteen years in senior management at Ericsson, working in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Large organisations, complex change, and teams who had every reason to be sceptical of the latest thing head office was enthusiastic about.

9 years

Film

Nine years in film, on productions including Dunkirk and Wonder Woman. Enormous crews, immovable deadlines, and a daily lesson in how skilled people work together under real pressure.

At 70

Learning AI from scratch

Then, in retirement and with no technical background, learning to use Claude properly. Not as a demonstration and not as a hobby, but as a working tool. That is why the training does not assume you have missed something everyone else already understands.

Why this matters to you

The hard part is people, not software

Most AI training assumes the difficulty is technical. In my experience it almost never is. Teams stall because people are uncertain, because nobody has said out loud what is and is not allowed, and because the first attempt produced something disappointing and nobody went back for a second.

Those are change management problems. They are what I spent forty-five years doing, long before any of this existed. The technology is the straightforward half.

It also means I take your existing expertise seriously. The skills that make you good at your job (judgement, clear thinking, knowing what finished work looks like) are exactly the skills that make someone good at this. You have not missed the boat. You are better placed than you think.

Where I work

Based in Siem Reap, working across the region

I live and work in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and deliver training in person across Cambodia and the wider region, and online throughout Asia and Australasia. My working day runs on Indochina Time, UTC+7, which covers Southeast Asia and Australasia in normal business hours and reaches the UK and Europe from mid-afternoon.

The thirteen years at Ericsson were spent in this part of the world: Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. I have led change in these markets before, which is not something most AI trainers can say from an office in Europe.

The AI Practitioner is the trading name of Groundframe Ltd, a UK-registered company.
